Vsebina

This seminar presents common English translation errors in context, in a variety of authentic texts (including finance, education, geography, tourism, and other fields). The texts were created by Slovenian translators and other professionals, and offer insight into the most frequent mistakes corrected by English copyeditors.

The topics covered include punctuation, capitalization, spelling, proper names, general morphology, agreement, parts of speech, plural modifiers, derivational patterns, verb forms, articles, adverbial syntax, selected vocabulary, stylistics, and register. The texts are also an opportunity to explore culturally-specific issues that arise in context, and solutions are offered for localizing them in a nonintrusive manner. The exercises focus on general issues that apply to most translated texts, and not on field-specific technical vocabulary.

The texts will be available to the participants in advance, with problem areas marked, so that they have the option to make corrections themselves. As the solutions to the problems are presented, the participants are welcome to ask about the grammatical theory or general patterns behind any of the issues, and the lecturer will briefly review any of these as a mini-refresher.
